May 1, 2024 It's
a cold start to May. Some squash and pumpkin starts I put out
last week froze before I could cover them last evening. Early
garden starts are always a gamble. The reliable early crops to plant are in: peas, spinach, carrots, and lettuce.
Shooting stars used to be a rarity here--they've really come on in recent years.
This was the grass dew thawing this morning...
Here's a white crowned sparrow this morning, not seen in our yard at all last year... May 3
A
pair of rednecked grebes on the Millpond. I'm concerned that with
heavy use of kayaks and increased fishing in the Mill pond, they are
not as successful at breeding....
The mountainous west is full of arrowleaf balsam root in May, and Spirit Lake is no exception...

It's camas blooming time, locally paler than this from Post Falls Dam area...
These goslings are still in their cute phase, soon to be gangling teenagers...
Successful male quail on a rail.
I've
noticed this growing below our yard in the wild for several years.
I finally identified it as Wayside Gromwell or Puckoon (native
name--roots of some species used for dye)
This the picture of the crow I didn't get, except for the crow feet... I've already got those ;-)
